FM Sitharaman Unveils ₹10,000 Cr Biopharma Investment, Advances Semiconductor Mission 2.0

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday, February 1, 2026, announced a ₹10,000 crore investment in the biopharmaceutical sector over the next five years. This move aims to give a strong boost to India's pharmaceutical industry. Biopharmaceuticals, or biologics, are medicines made from living cells or tissues, not chemical synthesis. She also presented plans to intervene in six areas: manufacturing, strategic sectors, frontier sectors, healthcare, and advanced technology. Ms. Sitharaman said the semiconductor mission 2.0 will focus on producing equipment and materials for full-stack Indian Intellectual Property (IP). The India Semiconductor Mission (ISM), under the Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology, is designed to build a sustainable semiconductor and display ecosystem. The Finance Minister also announced support for mineral-rich states Odisha, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, and Tamil Nadu to set up critical mineral facilities. She emphasized that "Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas" remains the third Kartavya of the government. This comprehensive approach aims to strengthen India’s industrial and technology sectors while promoting inclusive growth.
