US Judge Orders Release of 5-Year-Old and Father from ICE Detention in Texas
February 1, 2026
A US judge has ordered the release of five-year-old Liam Conejo Ramos and his father, Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, from an immigration detention center in Texas. The ruling came after national outcry over the boy’s detention in Minneapolis. Judge Fred Biery called the government's actions a "perfidious lust for unbridled power". He criticized the immigration system for causing unnecessary trauma to children. Liam was taken into custody wearing a blue bunny-shaped hat and a Spider-Man backpack, which sparked wide sympathy. Authorities said they did not target the child but were aiming to detain his father, whom they described as an "illegal alien" who "abandoned" his son. The boy and his father came from Ecuador in 2024 seeking asylum and have followed immigration rules, said their lawyer Marc Prokosch. They were held in a detention center in San Antonio, Texas. Judge Biery said deportations should be carried out in a more orderly and humane way. This release order is part of growing criticism against strict immigration policies pushed under US President Donald Trump’s administration. Trump has intensified immigration enforcement in Minneapolis through a program called "Operation Metro Surge." Despite protests and legal challenges, a federal judge recently refused to stop deployment of immigration agents in the state.
