Unauthorised Digging Threatens Historic Naubad–Aliyabad Karez Water System in Bidar
February 1, 2026
Fresh worries have emerged over damage to Bidar’s ancient Naubad–Aliyabad karez water system. The centuries-old underground qanat was disturbed by unauthorized digging near its outlet. Deputy Commissioner Shilpa Sharma acted swiftly, visiting the site and ordering an immediate stop to all illegal work. She directed officials to take action against those responsible and to involve experts in conservation efforts. Environmental activist Vinay Malge, a member of the State Board for Wildlife, alerted the Deputy Commissioner about the threat. In his letter, Mr. Malge said, “Any alteration that reduces groundwater retention time risks permanently damaging the revived karez line.” He explained that the karez is an ancient water system built during the 15th century Bahmani period. This unique system collects groundwater through carved tunnels in laterite rock, a rare feature. Mr. Malge also stressed, “The karez should not be viewed merely as a tourism asset. It must be preserved as a long-term, sustainable solution to Bidar’s chronic water scarcity.” Experts say the structure holds potential as a UNESCO World Heritage site due to its historical and scientific importance. The district administration is now consulting specialists before permitting further activity. Conservationists demand that the karez and its recharge area be protected as a vital heritage-hydrological landscape. Once neglected, the Bidar karez represents a shining example of traditional water management perfect for the Deccan plateau's needs.
