In Kozhikode's Kodiyathur, locals and environmental activists organised a mass bathing and amateur swimming event on February 1 to demand scientific steps against the rising aggressive otter population. The event at the Iruvazhinji river included children and was led by the Chaliyar Divers Collective and the Iruvazhinji River Protection Committee. Kodiyathur grama panchayat president T. Kavitha inaugurated the event. The organisers said repeated otter attacks during river bathing were frightening people, yet no effective action had been taken. "Areas of the river regularly used for bathing by residents should at least be safeguarded from the entry of dangerous otters," said P.K.C. Mohammed, an organising committee member. Despite injuries to many, authorities have not responded well. Participants also called for stronger checks to stop private landholders from encroaching on river revenue land. Pollution from garbage and plastic dumping was another concern raised. Karassery grama panchayat president G. Abdul Akbar led villagers in taking an oath to support river protection efforts. The event also honoured 7-year-old Rena Fathima, Mukkom municipality’s swimming coaching programme brand ambassador, along with social media activists and divers. This creative protest highlighted the urgent need to safeguard the river environment and the safety of its users.
