Australian rental platforms used by real estate agents are exposing millions of tenant and landlord documents through easy-to-guess online links. A researcher found that sensitive papers like lease agreements, IDs, and payslips are accessible without any login on seven different platforms. The links are made using simple number codes that hackers can scan or guess. Some documents go back to 2017, with the latest links reaching up to 4 million. One platform even gave an authentication cookie after opening a lease, revealing a landlord’s full rental history to intruders. Inspection Express, one platform named in the report, has now upgraded security after being alerted last year. It said documents don’t appear on Google and links expire after a short time. Other platforms added measures like asking for a postcode before giving access. But many companies ignored questions from the researcher. Digital rights expert Samantha Floreani called this a “blatant disregard for the law and for people’s security.” She warned renters face risks since refusing to use these platforms can hurt their chances of getting homes. The Australian Information Commissioner said it has not received breach reports but is making rental tech privacy a key focus this year.
