Budget 2026 Boosts Fisheries and Animal Husbandry with New Schemes and Funding
February 2, 2026
Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman announced new schemes for the fisheries and animal husbandry sectors in the Union Budget on February 1, 2026. The Budget focuses on developing value chains, boosting entrepreneurship, and creating jobs in rural areas. It includes integrated development of 500 reservoirs and Amrit Sarovars. Special efforts will improve the fisheries value chain in coastal areas. Plans aim to reduce post-harvest losses and improve prices for fishers by connecting start-ups, women-led groups, and Fish Farmers Producer Organisations to markets. Budget support for fisheries stands at ₹2,761.80 crore. The Fisheries Ministry highlighted India's large inland reservoir network of 31.5 lakh hectares, which holds huge potential. Under Mission Amrit Sarovar, 68,827 Sarovars have been developed, including 1,222 linked to fisheries, supporting fish farming and biodiversity. Around 200 fisheries start-ups will receive support. The Animal Husbandry Ministry's allocation rose by 21% to ₹6,153.46 crore. The Budget targets better productivity, animal health, and infrastructure. It includes enhanced support for breed improvement, veterinary services, and disease prevention. The number of veterinary professionals will rise to over 20,000. A credit-linked subsidy will aid private veterinary colleges, animal hospitals, labs, and breeding centres. The Budget also promotes cooperation between Indian and foreign institutions. Additionally, cattle feed and cottonseed supplied by cooperatives will get tax deductions, and dividend income between cooperatives will be deductible under the New Tax Regime.
