India Raises Duty-Free Limit to ₹75,000 for Imported Goods
February 2, 2026
The Indian government announced on Sunday, February 1, 2026, that the duty-free limit for passengers bringing imported goods into India has been increased from ₹50,000 to ₹75,000. This change is part of the new Baggage Rules, 2026, which will come into effect at midnight on February 2, replacing the decade-old baggage regulations.
Under the updated rules, a resident or a tourist of Indian origin arriving in India by air or sea can bring in goods free of duty up to a value of ₹75,000. These articles must be carried on the person or in the passenger’s accompanied baggage.
For tourists of foreign origin, the duty-free limit has been raised from ₹15,000 to ₹25,000. This applies to all except infants.
Returning residents or tourists of Indian origin who have lived abroad for over a year can bring duty-free jewellery. Female passengers may carry gold, silver, platinum, or other precious metal jewellery weighing up to 40 grams. For others, the limit is 20 grams. Jewellery here means personal adornments, whether studded or plain.
The government’s revision aims to simplify customs rules and provide relief to travelers carrying goods into the country.
