Snapchat Locks 415,000+ Australian Under-16 Accounts Amid Social Media Ban
February 2, 2026
Snapchat has locked or disabled more than 415,000 accounts in Australia belonging to users under 16. This move follows the country's new social media ban for under-16s. The company announced this in a blog post on Monday. It said these accounts were either declared by users as under 16 or detected by Snapchat's age technology. "We continue to lock more accounts daily," the company added.
The ban started in December last year and covers 10 social media platforms. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said 4.7 million accounts across these platforms were removed or disabled right after the ban began. Despite this, there have been reports that some users bypass Snapchat’s facial age checks.
Snapchat admits there are "significant gaps" in how the ban works. The company said facial age detection can be off by two or three years. This means some young teens might still access the platform, while some older users may lose access by mistake.
The company also noted that other messaging apps not covered by the ban might attract teenagers instead. Snapchat said, "While we don’t yet have data to quantify this shift, it’s a risk that deserves serious consideration."
Australia’s eSafety commissioner, Julie Inman Grant, said the focus is on platforms where large numbers of young users exist. "We’re a small team, by necessity we are going to focus where the preponderance of young people are," she explained. She also mentioned some apps have about 100,000 users and the process will take time.
Both Snapchat and Meta want app store-level age checks. Inman Grant criticized current age verification tools for lacking a "liveness test" to confirm the image is real. She emphasized the importance of proper settings to avoid false bans or misses.
The eSafety commissioner will send notices to companies about how they comply with the ban. The total 4.7 million account removals include under-16 but also inactive or duplicate accounts. Besides Meta and Snapchat, other platforms have not shared removal numbers, and the eSafety office has not given a detailed breakdown.
