4.7 Magnitude Earthquake Hits Baramulla in Jammu and Kashmir, No Damage Reported
February 2, 2026
A 4.7 magnitude earthquake hit the Baramulla district in Jammu and Kashmir early Monday morning, creating panic in Pattan and nearby areas. The National Centre for Seismology said the quake struck at 5:35 a.m. at a depth of 10 km. The epicenter was near Pattan, about 10 km northeast of the tourist spot Gulmarg. Tremors lasted nearly 20 seconds but authorities reported no damage or casualties so far. Initially, the earthquake magnitude was recorded as 4.6 but later revised to 4.7. Kashmir lies in a very active seismic zone, classified as Zone VI by the Bureau of Indian Standards in its 2025 National Seismic Hazard Map. The region remains vulnerable to strong earthquakes, as seen in the devastating 7.6 magnitude quake in 2005 that killed thousands and destroyed much infrastructure along the Line of Control.
