Supreme Court Grants Bail to 3 Accused in Pune Luxury Car Accident; Blames Parents for Juvenile Crime
February 2, 2026
On February 2, 2026, the Supreme Court granted bail to three accused in the 2024 Pune luxury car accident case, which resulted in two deaths. Justices B.V. Nagarathna and Ujjal Bhuyan said parents must be blamed for such cases involving juveniles. The court said, "Substance abuse is another thing but giving them [children] car keys and funds to have a gala time is unacceptable."
The case dates back to May 19, 2024, when a 17-year-old boy, allegedly driving under the influence, hit and killed two IT professionals in Pune’s Kalyani Nagar area. The juvenile was given bail by the Juvenile Justice Board with light conditions, including writing an essay on road safety, which sparked nationwide outrage.
Several accused, including Amar Santish Gaikwad, Aditya Avinash Sood, and Ashish Satish Mittal, were arrested for their roles in swapping blood samples to hide the juvenile’s involvement. The Supreme Court had earlier asked for responses from the Maharashtra government regarding bail pleas filed by these accused.
Advocate Sana Raees Khan represented Mr. Gaikwad, who allegedly paid ₹3 lakh to a hospital assistant to replace the juvenile's blood sample. Mr. Sood and Mr. Mittal, represented by senior advocates Siddharth Dave and Siddharth Agarwal, had their blood samples used for tests linked to the minors in the car.
The Bombay High Court had rejected bail pleas of eight accused in December 2025. After public anger over the juvenile's initial bail, Pune police requested the Juvenile Justice Board to review the decision. The juvenile was later sent to an observation home and was released in June.
Among the 10 jailed in the blood swapping case are the juvenile's parents Vishal Agarwal and Shivani Agarwal, doctors Ajay Tawre and Shreehari Halnor, hospital staffer Atul Ghatkamble, and others including Sood, Mittal, and middlemen. The Supreme Court's recent bail order continues to stir debate on accountability in juvenile cases.
