Democrat Taylor Rehmet Wins Texas Senate Seat in Deep-Red Tarrant County
February 2, 2026
Democrat Taylor Rehmet defeated Republican Leigh Wambsganss in a special election for Texas Senate District 9 in Tarrant County, the nation's largest Republican county. Rehmet will serve the seat through early 2027 after the former Republican resigned to take another post. The win surprised many because the district has been deeply Republican.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis warned Republicans: "A swing of this magnitude is not something that can be dismissed. Republicans should be clear-eyed about the political environment heading into the midterms." He said this election result should not be ignored.
Suhag A Shukla, Hindu American Foundation chairman, linked the GOP loss to negative attitudes and policies. He said, "Just spitballing here…but maybe ICE agents shooting folks in the streets, a racially coded white panic over Indian American immigrants and running on a platform of shutting down Hindu temples (like a failed TX Senate candidate) are not winning strategies."
Texas has seen rising anti-Indian and anti-Hindu sentiments, with some local leaders calling Hindu temples "evil." The state recently froze H-1B hiring in government agencies and launched investigations into private companies with H-1B workers.
Leigh Wambsganss, endorsed by former President Donald Trump, reacted to her loss, saying: "The Democrats were energized. Too many Republicans stayed home." She called it a wake-up call for Republicans and hoped her party will bounce back in the November election.
This election highlights a surprising shift in a solidly Republican area and may signal challenges for the GOP in coming races.
