Democrat Taylor Rehmet Shocks Texas, Wins GOP Seat; Triggers MAGA Online Meltdown
February 2, 2026
Democrat Taylor Rehmet scored a stunning win in a special Texas election. The seat had been a Republican stronghold for years. Rehmet defeated Republican Leigh Wambsganss with over 57% of the vote. This upset came from a district that backed Trump by 17 points just earlier in 2024. Rehmet, who is White and a US Air Force veteran, sparked a huge backlash on social media among MAGA supporters. A verified X account falsely claimed Rehmet was Indian, pushing a 'Texas is being taken over by Indians' narrative. The account wrote, “No way, you’re telling me Indian colonized suburbs of Dallas voted for REHMET???” However, Rehmet is of German descent. Others mocked the racist assumptions, saying, “It’s so funny because these people think that racism unlocks forbidden knowledge... In reality, they are just exceptionally hateful and stupid people.” Influencer Elijah Schaffer blamed Indian voters for the GOP loss, saying, “Indians just colonized & voted a pro rape and pro gang candidate to run the most powerful county in Texas.” But census data shows the county is 43.1% White and only 7.5% Asian, with Indians at 1.4%. Former President Donald Trump had endorsed Wambsganss but distanced himself after the defeat, saying, “I’m not involved in that. That’s a local Texas race.” Although Rehmet will only fill the remaining 11 months of Republican Kelly Hancock’s term, who resigned after being appointed acting Texas comptroller, this win is seen as a political earthquake in Texas politics.
