Kerala Assembly Halts Amid Storm Over Sabarimala Gold Theft Case
February 3, 2026
The Kerala Legislative Assembly on Tuesday, February 3, 2026, faced chaos over the Sabarimala gold theft case. Opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) members stormed the Speaker's dais and raised banners demanding Devaswom Minister V.N. Vasavan's resignation. Speaker A.N. Shamseer stopped proceedings twice as protests grew. During Question Hour, MLAs blocked the Speaker's view. Anwar Sadat and T.V. Ibrahim tried to break security to reach the dais. The Speaker left at 9:40 a.m., stopping Question Hour midway. At 10 a.m., when proceedings resumed for Zero Hour, disruptions continued with more attempts to storm the dais. Another break followed as the Speaker left again to control the situation.
Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan said they would stall proceedings to protest what he called "intervention" from the Chief Minister's Office (CMO) in the SIT probe. Satheesan claimed all accused get bail due to the prosecution's "weak defense," warning that "main accused Unnikrishnan Potti will also get bail with CMO intervention."
Ruling ministers hit back strongly. General Education Minister V. Sivankutty pointed to Potti's alleged link with Congress leader Sonia Gandhi and other leaders. Minister M.B. Rajesh accused the Opposition of "insulting the High Court Justice" for political gain. Law Minister P. Rajeeve said the Opposition's protest aimed to "sabotage" the SIT probe.
Eventually, the Opposition boycotted the Assembly and walked out. Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Speaker Shamseer condemned the Opposition's "actions" in the House.
