Air India Grounds Boeing 787-8 After Pilot Reports Fuel Control Switch Defect
February 3, 2026
Air India has grounded one of its Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner jets after a pilot reported a possible defect in the aircraft’s fuel control switch. The airline said it informed India’s aviation regulator and is addressing the pilot’s concerns as a priority. A Boeing spokesperson said, “We are in contact with Air India and are supporting their review of this matter.” This grounding comes amid a continuing probe into last year’s Air India Boeing 787-8 crash near Ahmedabad that killed 260 people. The airline did not reveal details of the issue or flight. Reports said the defect was noticed after the plane landed in Bengaluru following a London flight. The 2023 crash involved the same aircraft model. The Indian Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) is investigating and a final report is due soon. A preliminary report last July showed the engines shut down after fuel switches moved from 'run' to 'cut off' shortly after takeoff, but it did not explain why. The US aviation regulator said Boeing’s fuel control switches were safe after the report. India’s aviation regulator also ordered checks on Boeing 787 and 737 cockpit fuel switches after the crash. Air India previously said inspections found no problems with the fuel switch mechanisms on its Boeing 787 fleet and restated this on Monday.
