Political and bureaucratic circles are shocked by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) SIT’s recent charge sheet on the ghee adulteration case. The report reveals that proxy firms supplied adulterated ghee to Tirumala Tirupati Devasthanams (TTD) since February 2019, during the TDP-led NDA government. Harsh Fresh Dairy, linked to Bhole Baba Dairy, is accused of selling adulterated ghee mixed with palm oils. The company won ghee supply contracts by offering low prices and faked inspection reports with help from TTD staff and external dairy experts. Premier Agri Foods, a longtime TTD supplier from Uttar Pradesh, also faces similar accusations. The ruling YSR Congress Party had claimed adulteration started only after 2019 under their regime. However, TTD’s former chairman and YSRCP district president Bhumana Karunakar Reddy said, “The CBI report has completely negated the ruling party’s view.” The probe alleges Bhole Baba Dairy used proxies to supply adulterated ghee even after being disqualified during the YSRCP regime. Four tankers of adulterated ghee detected in July-August 2024 entered TTD through proxy dairies after the TDP returned to power. The charge sheet states, “Though procurement rules were tightened in 2023, the proxies continued to supply ghee through connivance with departmental staff,” showing corruption across regimes. TTD trust board member G. Bhanuprakash Reddy said temple kitchen workers warned about foul-smelling ghee, but the concerns were ignored. He urges deeper investigation into kickbacks linked to Chinna Appanna, former PA to ex-TTD chairman Y.V. Subba Reddy. “When the report mentions Hawala transactions, it is time for the Enforcement Directorate to take over and delve deep into the case,” he added.
