13-Year-Old Australian Boy's Superhuman Swim Saves Family Lost at Sea
February 3, 2026
A 13-year-old boy from Australia, Austin Appelbee, swam for hours to save his family after they were swept out to sea. The family drifted 14 kilometers from Quindalup beach in Western Australia. Austin left his mother Joanne, 47, brother Beau, 12, and sister Grace, 8, holding onto two paddleboards while he swam to get help. He took a kayak initially but it was damaged and capsized. Austin clung to it before swimming the last 4 km without his lifejacket. "I didn't think I was a hero - I just did what I did," Austin told the BBC. His mother thought he did not survive initially. After four hours, Austin reached shore and called for help from his mother's bag. He then passed out and was taken to hospital. Joanne and the children were found hours later, cold but alive. Joanne said, "It was an absolute perfect ending to have them all well and happy and sore but no injuries." Police launched a big search after Austin's call. Insp James Bradley praised Austin's "determination and courage" and said his actions "cannot be praised highly enough." The Naturaliste Volunteer Marine Rescue Group called the boy's efforts "superhuman." Austin is recovering, still on crutches but back at school. He thanked the emergency services and ambulance crew for their quick help in the rescue. The family had been playing in shallow water when the wind changed and pushed them far out. They had no food or water but wore life jackets. Despite the chilling and tiring ordeal, Austin says he kept hope by thinking of his family and singing Christian songs.
