Two Arrested for Attempted Sabotage of German Naval Ships at Hamburg Port
February 3, 2026
Two men have been arrested for trying to sabotage German naval ships docked at the Port of Hamburg last year. The suspects, a 37-year-old Romanian and a 54-year-old Greek, worked at the port. Authorities say they deactivated safety switches, removed fuel tank caps, punctured water lines, and poured over 20kg of abrasive gravel into a ship's engine. Eurojust, the EU crime agency, warned that the damage could have seriously harmed the ships and delayed their missions, putting the German Navy at risk.
The arrests happened on Tuesday in Germany and Greece, following cooperation between German, Greek, and Romanian police. Officials also searched homes in all three countries to collect evidence. The investigation is still ongoing.
While German officials have not directly blamed Russia, the arrests surface amid growing fears of Kremlin-backed sabotage in Europe. Since Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, NATO countries have faced several sabotage attempts, such as damage to undersea cables and drone disruptions at airports and military bases. Russia denies involvement in these attacks.
Germany has boosted its defenses after a recent arson attack, linked to left-wing activists, caused widespread power outages earlier in the year.
