The US Department of Justice (DOJ) announced plans to revoke the citizenship of Gurmeet Singh. Singh is an Indian-origin man who became a US citizen by hiding a serious crime. He did not disclose his past conviction for rape during his naturalization. Singh kidnapped and sexually assaulted a woman in his taxi. The woman fell asleep in his car. Singh then drove to a side street. She woke up to him holding a knife to her throat. He warned her to stop resisting if she wanted to live. Then he bound, gagged, blindfolded, and raped her. Singh became a US citizen on October 19, 2011, after hiding this crime. In May 2014, he was convicted in New York for first-degree rape and second-degree kidnapping. He was sentenced to 20 years in prison. Citizenship can only be taken away through a federal court ruling. Only naturalized citizens, not those born in the US, can lose citizenship. The Trump administration pushed USCIS to send more such cases to the DOJ — 100 to 200 a month for 2026. Between 2017 and 2025, only about 120 cases were filed nationwide. This increase aims to protect the value of US citizenship but also adds pressure on the courts. US Attorney General Pam Bondi said, "This Department of Justice will continue to strip citizenship from those who commit heinous crimes and conceal them during the naturalization process. American citizenship is a great and sacred privilege that must be earned honestly." US Attorney Joseph Nocella Jr. added, "The defendant in this case secured U.S. citizenship through deceit, and on the heels of committing the heinous crimes of rape and kidnapping. This case, brought to strip the defendant of citizenship that he did not earn and to which he was not entitled, demonstrates our Office’s commitment to protecting the American people and defending the sanctity of U.S. citizenship." The case will now be heard in federal court, where a judge will decide if his citizenship should be revoked.
