The White House announced a big trade agreement with India on February 3, 2026. India has agreed to stop buying Russian oil. Instead, India will buy more oil from the United States, and maybe from Venezuela. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said, "The President struck another great trade deal with India." Prime Minister Narendra Modi also promised to invest $500 billion in the US. The investments will be in transportation, energy, and agriculture. Ms. Leavitt called this a "great trade deal thanks to President Trump." The deal came after a phone call between President Trump and Prime Minister Modi on February 2. Ms. Leavitt said, "They had a great call. It was very productive yesterday." The US will reduce its tariff on Indian goods from 25% to 18%. India will cut its tariffs on US goods to zero. Ms. Leavitt said, "This is a huge win for American workers, businesses and consumers alike." President Trump shared the news on Truth Social, saying India will "BUY AMERICAN" with over $500 billion in energy, technology, agriculture, coal, and more. Prime Minister Modi thanked President Trump and said, "Delighted that Made in India products will now have a reduced tariff of 18 per cent. Big thanks to President Trump on behalf of the 1.4 billion people of India for this wonderful announcement." Modi added, "When two large economies and the world’s largest democracies work together, it benefits our people and unlocks immense opportunities. President Trump’s leadership is vital for global peace, stability, and prosperity." This deal ends earlier 50% US tariffs on India, including 25% for India's purchases of Russian oil. It marks stronger ties between the two countries led by Modi and Trump, both known to "GET THINGS DONE."
