Israeli Strikes Kill 18 in Gaza, Patient Evacuation Halted at Rafah Crossing
February 4, 2026
Israeli tank shelling and airstrikes have killed 18 people, including four children, in Gaza. Palestinian officials report that Israel has stopped the evacuation of patients through the Rafah border crossing. The Israeli military said it fired on Gaza after a gunman shot and seriously injured an Israeli reservist. The attacks targeted Gaza City and Khan Younis in the south.
A Gaza health official said the passage of patients through Rafah to Egypt, which had reopened two days ago, is now halted. The Red Crescent confirmed that patients waiting at a Khan Younis hospital were told the crossing was closed. "They called the patients and said today there is no travel at all, the crossing is closed," said Raja’a Abu Teir, a Palestinian patient awaiting evacuation.
Israel's Cogat agency said Rafah crossing remains open but had not received coordination details from the World Health Organization to allow the crossing. The WHO did not comment immediately.
Reopening Rafah was part of the October ceasefire brokered by US President Donald Trump’s plan to stop fighting between Israel and Hamas militants. Sixteen patients and 40 escorts crossed to Egypt on Tuesday, while a Hamas source said around 40 people entered Gaza from Egypt the same day.
In January, Trump announced the second phase of the ceasefire plan to negotiate Gaza's future governance and rebuilding. However, key issues like Israeli troop withdrawal from occupied areas and Hamas disarmament remain unresolved. The ceasefire has seen near-daily violence.
Since the truce began, Israeli fire has killed at least 530 people in Gaza, mostly civilians, according to Gaza health officials. Palestinian militants have killed four Israeli soldiers during the same time, Israeli authorities said.
