IndiGo Cancels Most Flights in December, Over 10.4 Lakh Passengers Impacted

More than 10.46 lakh passengers were affected by flight cancellations in December. According to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), over 93% of the impacted passengers were due to IndiGo cancellations. IndiGo alone affected 9.82 lakh passengers and spent ₹22.74 crore on compensation and services. The overall cancellation rate among scheduled domestic airlines was 6.92%, while IndiGo's cancellation rate was higher at 9.65%. IndiGo, the largest airline in India, faced major disruptions early December, causing its market share to drop from 63.6% in November to 59.6% in December. Passenger complaints were also high, with 29,212 received across scheduled domestic airlines, averaging about 20.41 complaints per 10,000 passengers. Flight delays impacted 8.34 lakh passengers, with airlines paying ₹4.50 crore for facilitation. Additionally, 2,050 passengers were denied boarding, resulting in ₹2.08 crore in compensation. Over the year, domestic airlines carried 1,669.46 lakh passengers, a 3.48% rise from the previous year. Meanwhile, Air India Group’s market share increased to 29.6% and Akasa Air’s to 5.2% in December. SpiceJet also saw a gain, rising to 4.3%. State-owned Alliance Air’s share stayed constant at 0.4%.
