Madras High Court Ends Case Over Controversial Book Absence at Chennai Book Fair 2026
February 4, 2026
The Madras High Court on Wednesday closed the suo motu contempt case against Keezhaikattru Publishers. The Greater Chennai City Police reported no book titled ‘Thirupparankundram Issue: Is G.R. Swaminathan a judge or a RSS Rowdy?’ was published or sold at the Chennai Book Fair 2026. The fair was organised by the Booksellers and Publishers Association of South India (BAPASI). The First Division Bench, led by Chief Justice Manindra Mohan Shrivastava and Justice G. Arul Murugan, also dismissed a writ petition that had asked the police to seize all copies of the book. Petitioner P. Naveenprasad from Vellore had based the petition on a social media flyer claiming the book was available at stalls 172 and 173. Earlier, on January 7, the Bench observed the book’s title was "highly derogatory and abusive," and ordered police to stop its sale. Following the order, Additional Advocate General J. Ravindran told the court the police checked the stalls on January 7. They found stalls 172 and 173 belonged to Jeeva Pathipagam and Iyagriva Publishers, not Keezhaikattru Publishers, who occupied stalls 174 and 175. Saidapet Inspector K. Settu filed an action report confirming "no objectionable books, caricatures, pictorial representations or electronic materials" were found. He added Keezhaikattru Publishers had stopped selling related books following an objection by BAPASI on January 3, as seen in their Facebook post. The BAPASI president also submitted a statement on January 19 confirming the book was not published or sold during the fair. From January 7 to 21, Inspector Settu continuously monitored the fair and confirmed no such book was sold. The court concluded that the allegations were unsubstantiated and closed the cases.
