14-Year-Old Boy Stabs Art Teacher in France Saying He Had 'Too Much Hatred'
February 4, 2026
A 14-year-old boy stabbed his 60-year-old art teacher three to four times in the chest at La Guicharde school in Sanary-sur-Mer, southeastern France. He told police he attacked her because he had "too much hatred," prosecutor Raphaël Balland said. The attack happened in front of 22 students on Tuesday. The teacher, who has worked at the school for 28 years, was quickly taken to Sainte-Anne Military Hospital in Toulon. She was stabilized after surgery but remains in serious condition.
The boy planned the attack in advance and took a kitchen knife from his home with the intention to stab his teacher, Balland said. There was no known religious or political motivation. The student was upset because the teacher had reported several disciplinary incidents against him, which he called "unfair." He also told authorities he "deeply regretted" what he did and felt more hatred towards himself than toward the victim.
After the attack, the school was evacuated and classes were cancelled the next day. The boy will appear in court soon, where authorities will decide if he will be held in pre-trial detention.
This violent act is the latest in a series of knife attacks by students in French schools. Education Minister Édouard Geffray called the attack "unacceptable" and noted that 525 bladed weapons had been seized in schools since March last year. He said, "Schools reflect our society, and they cannot, on their own, stem the rise in verbal and physical violence that characterizes our times." He urged a joint effort by families, teachers, officials, and citizens to reduce tensions and violence.
