West Kochi Faces Severe Water Shortage; Tankers Deliver Water Amid Court Orders
February 4, 2026
West Kochi is grappling with a serious water shortage despite multiple complaints from residents and councillors. In Fort Kochi, some areas receive water only every alternate day via tanker lorries. "There are areas that do not receive water at all, and in such places, we are relying entirely on tanker lorries," said Shiny Mathew, councillor of Division 1 (Fort Kochi). She named zones near the PWD Rest House, St. John De Britto Anglo-Indian High School, and Cochin Club as badly affected. She added that the Kerala Water Authority (KWA) informed them about a pipeline problem and a required connection change. There are also allegations that water is being diverted, worsening the scarcity.
The issue reached the court through a petition filed by resident Thampi Subramaniyan of ESI Road. He highlighted the acute drinking water shortage in western Kochi and asked for proper water supply and installation of flow meters to prevent water diversion and improve management.
KWA officials explained that the current crisis resulted from several issues. "There were KSEB shutdowns which stopped pumping, plus maintenance work and air blocks in pipelines disrupted water flow," said an official. "These disruptions caused the shortage. However, we are getting back to normality now."
The court has ordered KWA to submit an affidavit within two weeks detailing the actions taken to ensure proper drinking water supply. KWA is preparing this affidavit as directed.
