The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) informed the Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court on February 4, 2026, that the alleged jewelry theft case causing the detention of temple security guard B. Ajith Kumar has been closed. Justice S. Srimathy asked if the allegations were true, to which the CBI replied, "no." The judge remarked, "So there was nothing. A person was beaten to death in a case where there was nothing." The CBI said it would file a report about action against the complainant, Nikitha, who started the incident. Ten police personnel are accused in the custodial death case. The CBI has filed charge sheets against them in Madurai's Fifth Additional District and Sessions Court. The case involves police excess. The court adjourned bail hearings. Ajith Kumar was detained after Nikitha’s gold jewelry went missing from her car at the Badrakali Amman Temple in Sivaganga district. Ajith Kumar died on June 28, 2025, during police interrogation. The state government transferred the cases to the CBI. Several police officers, including five who were arrested and others named later, face charges in the custodial death.
