Indian-Origin Truck Driver Sentenced to 10 Years for $3.4M Cocaine Smuggling
February 5, 2026
Jasbir Singh, an Indian-origin truck driver, was sentenced to 10 years in jail for transporting cocaine from the US to Canada in 2023. Authorities found 61 kilograms of cocaine in his truck at the Ambassador Bridge, Windsor-Detroit. Officers discovered 40 bricks of cocaine in plain view, each weighing one kilogram, and another 20 bricks hidden in a box. Singh pleaded guilty and told the court, "I was a courier and not a mastermind of the operation." He said agreeing to deliver this multimillion-dollar shipment was a choice he will regret forever because he will miss important years of his daughter's life. Superior Court Justice Paul Howard called the 61-kg seizure a "significant amount" of a drug that "does damage to our communities." The judge highlighted, "absent importation, there’d be no cocaine in Canada," stressing the impact of smuggling. The cocaine's estimated 2023 value was $3.4 million, with a street sale value around $5.4 million. Singh's family and friends sent character letters, describing him as family-oriented and hardworking, known for supporting newcomers in Canada. His defence lawyer said this was a one-time incident and Singh was only a courier. In a letter to the judge, Singh admitted, "there was no excuse" for his actions and said, "I must face the consequences of my action." Yet, he asked his punishment to not be "too crushing" so he could return to support his family and daughter sooner.
