UAE Cuts Working Hours for Ramadan 2026 in Private and Government Sectors
February 5, 2026
The UAE will reduce working hours in both private and government sectors for Ramadan 2026, which is expected to begin around February 18–19 after crescent moon sighting. This change helps employees manage fasting, prayer, and family time during the holy month.
Under UAE labour law, private sector workers must work two hours less each day in Ramadan. For example, an 8-hour day becomes 6 hours. This applies to all private employees no matter their religion. Employers must follow this rule or face penalties.
Government employees will work from 9:00 am to 2:30 pm Monday to Thursday and 9:00 am to 12:00 pm on Friday, a shorter schedule designed to support religious duties and family time. Many government offices also allow remote work, especially on Fridays, for up to 70% of staff.
Schools will usually shorten hours to support fasting students and staff. Public services like parking and toll collections will also adjust their timings.
The working hour reductions are backed by Article 17 of the UAE Labour Law and official government rules. Employers must apply these hours or risk complaints and inspections, especially in the private sector.
For Ramadan 2026, UAE workers should prepare for shorter days, official flexible work options, and changes in school hours. These steps help keep work productive while respecting Ramadan’s spiritual and cultural significance.
