Abu Dhabi is introducing Nutri-Mark, a new front-of-pack nutrition label system to help consumers make healthier food choices. Nutri-Mark uses letters from A to E, coloured from dark green to red, to rate a product's nutritional quality. An 'A' means the best nutrition, while 'E' marks the lowest. This system covers foods like baked goods, dairy, oils, beverages and children's food, making it easier for shoppers to compare similar items. The label shows clear, quick nutrition info at a glance, removing confusion from complex ingredient lists. The Nutri-Mark system began in late 2024 on a voluntary basis. But from June 1, 2025, it will become mandatory for certain food categories sold in supermarkets. Products without credible Nutri-Mark labels risk being removed from shelves or fined. Authorities plan to eventually expand the system to all food items in Abu Dhabi. Nutri-Mark helps combat rising obesity and chronic diseases by encouraging consumers to pick healthier products with less sugar, salt and bad fats. It also pushes manufacturers to improve their recipes. Some brands have already reformulated products to earn higher grades before the compulsory phase starts. The Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council and Abu Dhabi Public Health Centre supervise the program. They provide standards and check that labels are accurate. To aid shoppers, Nutri-Mark links with the TAMM app. By scanning barcodes, users can instantly see nutrition grades and details, complementing physical labels. Nutri-Mark forms part of Abu Dhabi’s Healthy Living Strategy, aiming to make healthy options the easy choice and reduce obesity levels. Officials say the goal is not just to inform but to transform food environments and industry practices for better public health. Overall, Nutri-Mark stands out as a leading regional push for clear food labelling and healthier eating habits across Abu Dhabi.
