HAL Ready to Deliver Five Tejas Mk-1A Jets to Indian Air Force, Engine Supply Delays Persist
February 5, 2026
Hindustan Aeronautics Ltd (HAL) said on February 5, 2026, that five Tejas Mk-1A light combat aircraft are fully ready for delivery to the Indian Air Force (IAF). The deal for 83 jets was signed by the Defence Ministry in February 2021 worth ₹48,000 crore. Delays have occurred mainly because GE Aerospace missed several deadlines for supplying the aero engines that power the jets.
A HAL spokesperson said, "The HAL confirms that five aircraft are fully ready for delivery, incorporating major contracted capabilities in accordance with the agreed specifications." The official added, "An additional nine aircraft have already been built and flown. Upon receipt of engines from GE, these aircraft will be made ready for delivery."
The spokesperson also noted that all design and development challenges are being addressed swiftly. HAL is holding active talks with the IAF to deliver the aircraft as soon as possible. They confirmed, "The HAL has received five engines from GE as on date. The supply position from GE is positive, and the future delivery outlook aligns with HAL's delivery plans."
"HAL assures that it will meet the guidance projected for the current financial year," the spokesperson said. The Indian Air Force is keen to induct these jets as its fighter squadron count has dropped from the sanctioned 42 to 30.
Tejas is a single-engine multi-role fighter capable of air defense, maritime reconnaissance, and strike missions in high-threat environments.
