Doctors at the State-run Sri Jayadeva Institute of Cardiovascular Sciences and Research treated a 65-year-old Syrian woman suffering severe heart disease last week. She spoke only Arabic, causing a major communication barrier. To understand her medical history, doctors recorded her responses and used mobile phone translation tools to convert her words into English. Institute Director B. Dinesh told The Hindu, "Language was a major barrier. Our team had to translate almost every word she spoke to understand her condition." The patient experienced chest pain and breathlessness. She was diagnosed with severe triple-vessel coronary artery disease and complete heart block. Initially evaluated at Charaka Hospital in Shivajinagar, she was referred to Jayadeva Institute by Active Bengaluru Foundation. Senior cardiologists L. Sridhar and Natraj Shetty advised surgery. The operation was led by Professor Shilpa Suresh along with surgeons Sadiq Sheriff and cardiac anaesthetist Satish. Electrophysiologist S. Satish implanted a pacemaker, and a sutureless dressing was applied. The patient underwent the procedure last week and was discharged in stable condition on Wednesday. The hospital provided treatment free of cost with help from donor agencies and NGOs. Remaining expenses were covered by the institute, said Dr. Dinesh.
