Bengaluru's civic corporations are exploring off-street paid parking to ease the growing space crunch as strict no-parking and paid on-street parking rules roll out. Officials plan a pilot project to convert space beneath flyovers into parking spots. If successful, private landowners may join through a public-private partnership to offer paid parking on private land. Meanwhile, Bengaluru Traffic Police (BTP) propose multi-level car parking (MLCP) to help accommodate vehicles. With 1,194 no-parking stretches across Bengaluru and around 2,000 to 2,500 new vehicles added monthly, street parking is shrinking fast. A senior official from the North Corporation said, "Once paid parking is implemented and no-parking rules are strictly enforced, commuters will resort to illegal parking on bylanes due to the lack of space. While such parking can be curbed through towing, it is essential to ensure adequate parking space for vehicles, which makes off-street parking necessary." A senior traffic officer added, "This will push vehicles onto footpaths, affecting pedestrian infrastructure and putting pedestrian safety at risk." Illegal parking causes micro traffic jams in bylanes, which impact main road flow. However, officers cannot focus on bylanes during peak hours, said the officer. Though existing multi-level parking facilities are underused now, officials expect increased usage once illegal parking is controlled. "MLPs are underused because illegal parking is rampant, which will be curbed through towing. Once that happens, all MLPs will see increased usage," an officer explained. The Urban Land Transport policy also supports shifting parking off the street to off-street locations like commercial hubs and transit points, advising that off-street parking be priced lower. North City Corporation Commissioner Pommala Sunil Kumar confirmed, "There is scope to convert space beneath flyovers into parking facilities, which is currently being explored. However, there are issues related to entry and exit under flyovers, and these will be examined first." Other corporations are also planning off-road paid parking but are focusing currently on awarding on-street parking tenders. These steps aim to reduce illegal parking and ease congestion on Bengaluru’s busy roads.
