The Karnataka High Court has ordered the issuance of a notice on a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) seeking a direction for the State Election Commission (SEC) to announce a clear election schedule for the Shivamogga City Corporation (SCC). On February 5, a division bench led by Chief Justice Vibhu Bakhru and Justice C.M. Poonacha passed this order. The petition was filed by K.E Kanthesh, a businessman and son of former minister K.S. Eshwarappa. The petitioner pointed out that neither the SEC nor the Karnataka government has followed the Constitution by not holding timely elections for the SCC council. The council's term ended on August 30, 2023. The petitioner stated, "constitutional provisions mandate holding of election before expiry of term of the existing elected council." He also said, "On case of dissolution of the council, elections should be held within six months from the dissolution." The court's notice is expected to push the SEC to issue an election calendar within 15 days as demanded.
