Supreme Court Lets Jan Suraaj Party Take Bihar Welfare Scheme Case to Patna High Court
February 6, 2026
On February 6, 2026, the Supreme Court heard the Jan Suraaj Party's plea accusing Bihar Government of violating the Model Code of Conduct. The party claimed the state wrongly transferred ₹10,000 to women under the Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana after the 2025 Assembly poll schedule was announced. However, the JSP withdrew the petition. The Supreme Court allowed JSP to approach the Patna High Court instead. The court refused to set aside the whole Bihar Assembly election based on a political party's demand. Chief Justice of India Surya Kant remarked, "The court is seriously viewing the culture of irrational freebies before elections, but casts doubt on the bona fide of the Jan Suraaj Party, which has just lost the Assembly polls." He added, "The party failed in the elections, only to now use the judicial platform." Founded by ex-poll strategist Prashant Kishor, the JSP flagged the misuse of a state welfare scheme to sway voters before 2025 polls. The Mukhyamantri Mahila Rojgar Yojana, launched by Bihar's ruling NDA Government, transfers ₹10,000 directly to one woman per family, with a promise of ₹2 lakh for self-employment after assessment.
