At least 31 people have died and more than 169 were injured in a blast at a Shiite mosque in Islamabad, Pakistan. The explosion happened during Friday prayers at the mosque in the Tarlai area of the capital city. The cause of the blast is not yet confirmed, but reports suggest it was carried out by a suicide bomber. Hospitals in the city declared an emergency as dozens of injured rushed in. The district administration spokesman said on X that the number of injured had reached 169. Islamabad's deputy commissioner Irfan Memon confirmed on X that the death toll had risen to 31. A police source told AFP news agency that the numbers are "expected to rise further." Pakistan's Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed "deep grief" over the incident and condemned the attack. An AFP photographer saw dozens of people arriving at hospitals with injuries. The situation remains tense as investigations continue.
