Zambian Fisherman Killed by Crocodile While Fleeing Elephants Near Luangwa River
February 6, 2026
A 52-year-old fisherman, Dean Nyirenda, died after a crocodile attacked him in eastern Zambia. He was running from a herd of elephants when he jumped into a stream near the Luangwa River. "That is when he was attacked by a crocodile by biting his right thigh," said local police chief Robertson Mweemba. Nyirenda tried to fight off the crocodile with a stick and managed to escape from the water. He dragged himself out of the stream, but his two friends saw him bleeding heavily and helped him from the riverbank. Despite attempts to stop the bleeding, Nyirenda died. Wildlife officers found deep bite marks on his right thigh, causing the fatal injury. The Luangwa River area has many Nile crocodiles, and in 2023, 15 of the 26 wildlife-related deaths were caused by crocodile attacks there. Zambia has a large elephant population, leading to frequent clashes between humans and wild animals. Authorities warn locals and tourists to be very careful in wildlife zones. They are also planning measures like building protective fences near wildlife areas to reduce these dangerous encounters.
