Voltage Dip in Hong Kong Traps Dozens in Lifts, CLP Power Investigates
February 7, 2026
CLP Power in Hong Kong is investigating a voltage dip that caused over 50 people to get stuck in lifts on Friday evening. The Fire Services Department received more than 50 reports of people trapped between 6.30 pm and 8 pm. Most reports came from Sha Tin and Ma On Shan, with some from Kwai Tsing and Mong Kok. CLP Power said a 132,000-volt power grid connecting Ma On Shan to Sha Tin experienced a "brief voltage dip" at about 6.29 pm. A company spokesman said, "Power supply was not interrupted." He added, "Some customers or public facilities may experience dimming or flickering lights. Some electrical installations that are sensitive to voltage changes may suspend operations due to the activation of protective devices. CLP is currently monitoring the situation." The exact cause is unknown. According to the company’s website, outages can happen due to "unavoidable factors such as adverse weather, third-party damage or equipment failure."
