Iran and the United States met indirectly in Oman on Friday to discuss Iran’s nuclear program. This is the first contact since America attacked Iran’s uranium enrichment sites and recent nationwide protests shook Iran. Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi called the talks “a very good start.” Both sides focused on planning future negotiations rather than concrete agreements. US envoy Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner, President Trump’s son-in-law, represented the US but gave no immediate comment. Unusually, US Navy Admiral Brad Cooper also attended, hinting at the possibility of military action if talks break down. The US has strong military forces nearby, including the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and fighter jets, ready to act if needed. Whether this military force can change Iran’s stance or government remains uncertain.
