China-Canada Canola Trade Sees Cautious Revival Amid USMCA Talks
February 7, 2026
China has resumed initial canola shipments from Canada, providing hope to Canadian producers. Canola, used in cooking oil and animal feed, is a major Canadian export, with the country producing nearly 25% of the world's supply and handling about 60% of global trade. However, insiders warn that this early restart does not guarantee continuous imports. They cite the risk of the United States creating a "Fortress North America" by reinforcing trade barriers with Canada and Mexico through the USMCA trade pact. Masood Rizvi, an expert in agricultural technology and canola breeding from Saskatchewan, said, "I would be cautious about characterising the canola trade between China and Canada as having fully ‘returned to normal’. What we are seeing now is a measured resumption, not yet a structural reset." This cautious outlook highlights uncertainty over China's commitment to stable long-term canola imports from Canada as trade negotiations proceed.
