Trump Raises US Tariff Quota on Argentine Beef Amid Soaring Prices
February 7, 2026
On Friday, President Donald Trump signed a proclamation to increase the low-tariff import quota for Argentine beef. This aims to ease the high prices US consumers face for beef. However, economists say this move may not significantly lower grocery costs.
A White House official earlier said Trump planned this step to address rising beef prices, which helped Democrats win some elections in 2025. US beef prices hit record highs last year. Ranchers gained from strong demand but had cut cattle herds to the lowest in 75 years due to drought and high feed costs.
Trump’s new tariff quota raises the allowed import of Argentine lean beef trimmings by 80,000 metric tons. These trimmings mix with local supplies to make hamburger meat and will face lower duties.
Republican Senator Deb Fischer from Nebraska opposed the import boost. She said, "Instead of imports that sideline American ranchers, we should be focused on solutions that cut red tape, lower production costs, and support growing our cattle herd."
The US and Argentina have also signed a broader trade deal to give US goods better access to the Argentine market.
Currently, US imports about 33,000 metric tons of Argentine beef, just 2% of total imports. Experts say the extra imports won't hugely lower prices but might help food companies improve profits.
