Hong Kong police arrested a 31-year-old man from Sha Tin for making a bomb hoax threat targeting Admiralty MTR station. Inspector Luke Hung Sze-tat said the man posted the threat on an online war game forum. Police searched the busy station but found no suspicious objects. The force received reports from two residents last Tuesday about the threat, which was to occur on February 17, the first day of Lunar New Year. Officers from various units searched the station and found nothing dangerous. Police later identified and arrested the man at his home on Friday. They seized three imitation guns, including two rifles and one pistol, plus gun parts, plastic bullets, gas canisters, tactical helmets, vests, and belts used for war games. No bomb materials were found in the flat he shared with family. “The force believes that this person acted alone and had no other accomplices. He is also a war game and military gear fanatic,” said Inspector Hung. Chief Inspector Nicole Hui Nok said the man’s motivation is still under investigation. She warned, “I would like to remind residents that the internet is not a lawless place.” Hong Kong law punishes making a bomb hoax with up to five years in prison. Possessing imitation firearms can lead to up to two years’ imprisonment. The man remains in police custody.
