Thailand Takes Land, Displaces Cambodians After Border Clashes

Thai forces have seized land along the Cambodia border after clashes last year. A rusty container marks the new border with a sign warning, “Cambodian citizens are strictly prohibited from entering this area.” Cambodians on the other side have lost homes and farms. Kim Ren, from Chouk Chey village, said her house was bulldozed by Thai troops after a ceasefire in December. “The Thais reset us to zero. We don’t have any more hope,” she told reporters. Nearby in Ban Nong Chan, Thai soldiers guarded an excavator removing debris in a military-organised media tour. The land gained adds up to several square kilometres. Bangkok claims it has reclaimed land that had long been occupied by Cambodians.
