Bhagirathpura Water Contamination Claims Another Life in Indore, Families Demand Justice
February 7, 2026
A 70-year-old man, Alguram Yadav, died on February 5, 2026, in a private hospital in Indore. His family says the death is linked to the water contamination tragedy in Bhagirathpura, where a serious outbreak began in late December 2025. Residents now claim the death toll has reached 33, much higher than official counts. Alguram was admitted on January 9 with vomiting and diarrhoea due to contaminated water, his daughter-in-law Chandrakala told PTI. She said, "He was admitted to a private hospital on January 9 after he complained of vomiting and diarrhoea due to contaminated drinking water. Doctors could not save him despite prolonged treatment. He was cremated today." She also mourned the loss of her mother-in-law Urmila Yadav who died on December 28 from the same cause, adding, "Contaminated water has taken away two members of our family within just 40 days." However, Chief Medical and Health Officer Dr Madhav Prasad Hasani stated Alguram had a history of paralysis and a fracture in his right thigh bone. Government experts from Mahatma Gandhi Memorial Medical College conducted a 'death audit' on the outbreak. The report, submitted to the Madhya Pradesh High Court on January 27, linked 16 deaths directly to contaminated water. The state government has given ₹2 lakh each as financial aid to over 20 families affected. Officials said some deaths had other causes, but compensation was given out of compassion. The water contamination disaster continues to distress Bhagirathpura residents as they seek more clarity and justice.
