Two more bodies were found at the illegal coal mine in Meghalaya's East Jaintia Hills district on Saturday, February 7, bringing the death toll to 27. The blast took place on Thursday, February 5, in the Thangsku area of Umsngat village. Police stated that several people are still missing and the search efforts by multiple agencies continue. Superintendent of Police Vikash Kumar said work is underway to confirm the identities of the deceased. Authorities have filed a suo motu FIR at Khliehriat police station, citing the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Act, and the Explosive Substances Act. So far, two accused individuals have been arrested: Forme Chyrmang, 36, from Jalaphet Pordung village, and Shamehi War, 42, from Sutnga Pohwailong village. The search and investigation are ongoing.
