Danone, Nestle, Lactalis Recall Infant Formula Over Toxic Contamination
February 7, 2026
Several of the world’s biggest dairy companies, including Danone, Nestle, and Lactalis, issued recalls of infant milk formula this month as a safety move. The recall targets batches possibly contaminated with cereulide, a toxin known to cause nausea and vomiting. Babybio, a brand owned by Vitagermine, announced on its website that three specific batches of its infant formula were withdrawn. Danone’s shares dropped 2.5%, and Nestle’s shares fell over 1% by 0830 GMT following the news. Babybio explained, "In the current sector context and following recent changes in the authorities' recommendations, we have conducted new investigations." They added, "The results we have just received have led us to take the decision today to withdraw three batches strictly limited to Optima 1 infant formula for newborns." This case shows how one tainted ingredient can quickly cause wide recalls in the tightly controlled infant nutrition market, prompting quick regulator responses and market unease. Analysts predict a financial hit for the companies involved as the recalls continue.
