ISLAMABAD: Pakistan's Supreme Court has scheduled 13 petitions involving PTI founder Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, for hearing on Monday, February 9. A two-judge bench led by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi and Shahid Bilal Hassan will hear the cases at 9am. These petitions include the Punjab government's appeal against bail granted to Imran Khan and Bushra Bibi. Imran’s appeal regarding a case under the Official Secrets Act and the National Accountability Bureau's case on Al-Qadir University Trust will also be heard. The court will review a petition against the acquittal of Imran and former foreign minister Shah Mahmood Qureshi in the cipher case. Additionally, the Punjab government’s appeal against bail granted in five cases is on the list, along with Imran’s appeal against a Rs10 billion defamation lawsuit filed by Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Imran Khan has been imprisoned since August 2023 after convictions in multiple cases, including the Toshakhana case involving unlawfully selling gifts. He faces jail terms up to 17 years, including in the cipher and Al-Qadir Trust corruption cases. Both he and Bushra Bibi were last month sentenced to 17 years in another Toshakhana case. Meanwhile, the Supreme Court issued standard operating procedures (SOPs) for handling complaints from "aggrieved litigants". This came after PTI representatives raised concerns about access to Imran Khan in prison and his medical reports. The KP chief minister and PTI lawmakers approached the Supreme Court on January 30, and again on February 6 with a signed memorandum. The court stressed that it referred these issues to relevant authorities since they did not directly affect court proceedings. The new SOPs ensure accessibility and medical facilities for prisoners without affecting court decorum or other litigant rights.
