Tom Holland's Podcast Voice Interrupts UK Supreme Court with Jimmy Carter Impersonation
February 7, 2026
Last week, the UK Supreme Court faced an unusual moment when Tom Holland's voice from the popular podcast The Rest Is History suddenly played through the court's microphone. The voice was delivering a satirical impersonation of former US president Jimmy Carter. One of the judges accidentally pressed play on the podcast on his phone, causing the unexpected audio to fill the courtroom. As the theme song played loudly, a lawyer began to laugh, and Lord Briggs looked down at his phone. "The Rest Is History. It was switched to silent, do carry on," Lord Briggs said, making the courtroom laugh. The moment was recorded and quickly shared online by the podcast's social media team with the caption, “What was Jimmy Carter doing in the supreme court last week?” A Supreme Court spokesperson confirmed the video is real and added, "Lord Briggs switched off his phone quickly and apologised to the court." The podcast, co-hosted by Tom Holland and Dominic Sandbrook, has over 600 episodes and more than 20 million monthly downloads. Holland's lively impressions are a fan favorite on the show. Fans online enjoyed the surprise, with comments like, "Of ALL of the impressions that could’ve played, of course it was the most accurate one," and "They couldn’t have picked a better intro. Imagine their shock when they heard Jimmy Carter resurrected from the dead." The Rest Is History launched in 2020, created by Goalhanger, Gary Lineker’s podcast company. Holland said he suggested pairing with Sandbrook for the podcast, to the latter’s humorous regret. Sandbrook highlighted the podcast's success by explaining, "History is quite embattled as a discipline. Lots of historians would probably say anything that tries to spark public interest must be a good thing … we wouldn’t have the number of listeners we have if people didn’t find history completely gripping." The show is part of a larger Goalhanger network including The Rest Is Politics, The Rest Is Science, and The Rest Is Football. Notable past guests on The Rest Is History include Stephen Fry, Michael Wood, Mary Beard, Sir Ian Kershaw, William Dalrymple, and Marc Andreessen.
