February 7, 2026
Over 70 students fell ill after eating semi-cooked idly and sambar at the Government Tribal Welfare Ashram School in Devarapalli, Polavaram district, on Saturday. Authorities suspect food poisoning is the cause. The Integrated Tribal Development Agency shifted the affected students to Rampachodavaram Area Hospital and nearby health centers after complaints of vomiting and stomach pain. Polavaram district in-charge Collector A. S. Dinesh Kumar told The Hindu, "food poisoning was suspected to be the cause of the illness and that all the students admitted to hospitals were out of danger." Water and food samples have been collected for testing and more investigations are ongoing. Health Minister Satya Kumar Yadav contacted officials on Saturday to check the treatment of the students. He said additional medical specialists should be sent if needed and asked for updates on the students’ health.
