Wilma Spence’s father, Albert Kemp, a WWII Anzac buried in Gaza War Cemetery, has likely lost his grave after Israeli Defense Forces bulldozed the site. Kemp fought in the 2/7 Battalion and died in Palestine in 1942 at age 27. Satellite images show heavy earthmoving and destroyed graves in the area, mostly holding Australian soldiers from WWII. The IDF claims the damage was necessary to counter "underground terrorist infrastructure" near the cemetery. Families like Wilma’s reject this explanation and feel deep grief and anger. Wilma has been appealing to Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese since October 2023 to investigate and protect the cemetery. She says, "They have no respect for the living, so why would they respect the dead?" The Office of Australian War Graves is concerned and plans repairs once it is safe. Acting PM Richard Marles confirmed the government’s worry and promise to restore graves when possible. Wilma hopes the government will use the upcoming visit of Israeli President Isaac Herzog to press for access and restoration. She wrote a poem expressing her sorrow: "I stood at your grave in the Gaza sun... My tears fell in the dust, it seemed unjust to lose you, so young – unfair."
