Sydney Police Urge Protesters to Change March Route During Isaac Herzog Visit
February 8, 2026
Sydney police have urged the Palestine Action Group to change their march route during President Isaac Herzog’s visit. The group plans to march from Town Hall to State Parliament on Monday night. This route breaks a police ban on protests in the area. Acting Assistant Commissioner Paul Dunstan said negotiations continue with Josh Lees of the Palestine Action Group. Police want the march moved to Hyde Park and then to Belmore Park to keep the protest peaceful. Dunstan said, "I do have concerns about the size of town hall, and possibility of overflow into public areas, which could lead to conflict between police and protesters." Premier Chris Minns supported the alternate route, saying it "would have dramatically lowered tensions in the city." Minns invoked special powers allowing police to prevent protests and close locations. Violators may face fines up to $5,500. Josh Lees confirmed the group will challenge these powers in NSW Supreme Court. He said, "We are taking Chris Minns to court again. He has imposed sweeping search, exclusion and conduct restrictions across our city in an attempt to shut down dissent." Over 3,000 police officers will be deployed in Sydney during the visit with motorcades, barriers, and clearways expected in the CBD. Dunstan called for peaceful protests, saying, "We do not want conflict. We want to ensure that this is conducted in a peaceful and safe manner." Minns urged the public for "respect and calm as we get through the next four days."
