Protesters Arrested in Minnesota Marking One Month Since Renee Good’s Death by Immigration Officer
February 8, 2026
Police arrested several demonstrators on Saturday outside a federal building just south of Minneapolis. The protest marked one month since Renee Good’s death at the hands of an immigration officer. Renee Good was killed on 7 January while driving away from immigration officers in a Minneapolis neighborhood. Her death, along with that of Alex Pretti weeks later, has sparked nationwide anger over President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.
Scores of protesters gathered near the Bishop Henry Whipple federal building around midday. They threw bottles and sex toys at police guarding the building. The Minnesota Star Tribune reported some protesters also threw chunks of ice. A deputy was hit in the head, and a squad vehicle’s windshield was smashed, according to the Hennepin county sheriff’s office.
Police declared the protest unlawful and ordered people to leave. While many complied, about 100 stayed, leading to a standoff with deputies, state troopers, and conservation officers. Videos on social media show several protesters being forced to the ground and arrested. One arrested person said, "I was here delivering pizza for the protesters. I had no idea that this was happening. I am a peaceful protester delivering pizza and they’re arresting me."
The sheriff’s office did not respond to requests for details on arrests or injuries.
Meanwhile, hundreds gathered in a snow-covered Minneapolis park to honor Renee Good and Alex Pretti. Organizers criticized the immigration crackdown, calling it a federal occupation. Lakota spiritual leader Chief Arvol Looking Horse led a ceremony, and people shared music and poetry remembering the two.
Renee Good, a 37-year-old mother of three, was shot by a federal immigration officer on 7 January. Video shows officers surrounding her car, with one officer firing as her vehicle moved toward him. The Trump administration has claimed Good tried to run over an officer, but state officials reject this.
Alex Pretti was killed on 24 January after a struggle with immigration officers. Video shows officers taking him down and opening fire after spotting his licensed gun.
On Wednesday, Trump’s border czar Tom Homan announced pulling 700 immigration officers from Minnesota, about a quarter of those in the state, after local officials agreed to cooperate on immigrant arrests. However, there is no clear end date to the crackdown.
Becca Good, Renee’s wife, said in a statement, "You know my wife’s name and you know Alex’s name, but there are many others in this city being harmed that you don’t know – their families are hurting just like mine, even if they don’t look like mine. They are neighbors, friends, co-workers, classmates. And we must also know their names. Because this shouldn’t happen to anyone."
